Hatch, Wyden Announce Markup of Pension Bills

WASHINGTON – Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) today announced the Committee will markup two pension related bills, the Miners Protection Act of 2016 and the Retirement Enhancement and Savings Act of 2016, on Wednesday, September 21st, in Room 215 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building at 10:00 a.m.

“Pension systems in America face a number challenges to sufficiently set, manage and meet financial obligations for retired workers across the country in a variety of industries,” Hatch said.  “The Finance Committee has a strong bipartisan tradition in shaping retirement policy, and I look forward to continuing that tradition by marking up a bill regarding the mine worker health and pension plans, along with a separate bill that will enhance the safety net for American retirees and their pensions.”

“The federal government made a promise to coal miners seven decades ago that their health care and pension benefits would be protected, and it’s time to make good on that promise,” Wyden said. “A lot of coal mining communities have fallen on hard times, but that’s no excuse to turn our backs on the tens of thousands of miners who’ve done backbreaking work and now face the threat of losing their livelihoods and access to health care. The clock is ticking down for Congress to act, so I look forward to getting this crucial legislation passed by the Finance Committee and through the Senate on a bipartisan basis.”
