Crapo: Republicans Stand Ready to Work on Meaningful Health Care Reform

Washington, D.C.—At a U.S. Senate Finance Committee hearing, Chairman Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) emphasized that Senate Republicans stand ready to discuss how to address spiraling costs under Obamacare and how to lower health care costs for all hardworking Americans, but that these discussions cannot take place during a government shutdown.

“As of Tuesday night, we have voted thirteen times to open the government,” said Crapo. “It’s not the Republicans who are refusing to open the government, it’s the Democrats. And they are refusing because we will not agree to their trillion-dollar-plus health care spending package that will simply throw more money at the issue rather than actually negotiating over real solutions that are needed to fix the coming health care crisis.

“Yes, premiums are going to go up dramatically. No, the reason that they’re going up is not because of the expiring temporary COVID premium support, which is only about 4 percent of the coming increase in premiums that is going to happen.

“We stand ready—and the Democrats know that we stand ready—to negotiate on meaningful health care reform.”
