Baucus Hires Montanan Rebecca Baxter to Finance Committee Staff

Chinook native will serve as counsel on tax team

Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Max Baucus (D-Mont.) today announced that he has hired Rebecca Baxter as tax counsel on the Democratic staff of the Senate Finance Committee. Baxter is a native of Chinook, Mont., and a graduate of both Montana State University and the University of Montana law school. Working for Baucus, Baxter will focus on issues surrounding the Federal taxes that individual Americans and families pay each year.

“Rebecca’s education, her experience and her Montana upbringing mean that she’ll always be thinking about how our work on tax policy will affect American families where they live,” said Baucus. “I couldn’t be more pleased to bring her onto the team.”

Baxter comes to the committee staff this month from the United States Tax Court, where she clerked for U.S. Tax Court Judge Harry Haines. Haines, from Missoula, is the first Montanan to serve on the special court. At the Court, Baxter engaged in extensive legal research and analysis of the U.S. Tax Code. She received her LL.M. in taxation from the University of Washington School of Law in 2003, after her 2002 graduation from the University of Montana School of Law. She also holds an undergraduate degree from Montana State University in agriculture education.

Baxter is the daughter of Doctor Roger A. Baxter of Chinook and Melinda Baxter of Lloyd, Mont.
