Wyden Warns Trump: Don’t Open the Doors to Chinese Spying in Trade Talks

Lifting Huawei ban would be ‘sacrificing the safety of American families some quick bucks and political points’

Washington, D.C. – Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., issued the following statement ahead of talks between Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping today regarding the ongoing trade dispute:

“Unfortunately, I cannot stop Donald Trump from playing politics with our trade relationships, but I will not allow him to play politics with our national security. Huawei and the other companies placed on the Entity List were added because their structure, financing and controlling powers are a clear and present danger to America’s long term security,” Wyden said. “Removing any of these entities as part of a trade deal is sacrificing the safety of American families for some quick bucks and political points. Republicans who claim to be tough on national security cannot stand by and let Donald Trump trade away Americans’ defense against foreign spying.”
