High Praise from Committee Republicans on Senate Tax Plan

Finance Committee Republicans Are All-In on Tax Plan That Saves Typical American Family Nearly $1,500

This week, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) announced a bold tax reform proposal that will provide middle-class tax relief, bring down tax rates across the board, and enhance America’s global competitiveness. With a markup beginning on Monday, Finance Committee Republicans are all-in on the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Here’s a look at what they’re saying:

“For years, Congress has examined, debated, and vetted policies designed to remake the tax code in a way that will keep pace with the 21st-century economy and better meet the needs of the American people. Helping Americans keep more of their hard-earned dollarsfind new jobs and increase their take-home pay has always been at the heart of this effort. And now, with a willing president, we have an opportunity to turn this effort into a reality.” —Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch

“The bill unveiled today takes a giant step forward to make our tax code simplerfairer and more competitive. It catches us up with our major trading partners, who have been lowering business tax rates while we’ve stood still. It will help bring back jobs and create new ones. It will boost American wages by promoting economic growth and incentivizing investment. The centerpiece of the legislation is a middle-class tax cut. The average middle class family of four would see a tax cut of more than $1,400.” — U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa)

“The Senate Finance Committee today released its legislative proposal toward Congress’ shared goal of delivering meaningful, pro-growth tax reform...I remain focused on working with my colleagues to develop a comprehensive measure that results in a tax code that is more simple and fairless costly to comply with, more competitive for American businesses and generates more job and economic opportunities for Idaho families.” —U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho)

“This bill will bring our tax code into the 21st century – providing middle-class Americans with the tax relief they need. Over fifty percent of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, and this bill is a critical step toward creating more jobs, at higher wages, and allowing Americans to keep more money in their pockets.” —U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.)

“A lot of things have changed since 1986, but unfortunately our tax code isn’t one of them…That is why we need tax reform that will not only make the system simpler and fairer, but also put more money in people’s pockets. This will help grow the economycreate more jobs and raise wages. I look forward to working with my colleagues to help pass tax relief to not only benefit hardworking Americans, but make our economy and country stronger.” —U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.)

“This is indeed a good day for the families who will benefit from this additional money in their paycheck, from the increased standard of living that they will enjoy, and for those of us who want to see businesses come back home from abroad…I'm proud to join my fellow Finance Committee colleagues...to support our version of the Tax Cuts and Job Act.” —U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas)

“This legislation is good news for American workers and American families. The legislation the Senate Finance Committee unveiled today lowers tax rates, doubles the standard deduction, and increases the child tax credit, all of which will put more money into the pockets of hardworking Americans and give them more flexibility to care for their families.” —U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.)

“This bill will update and simplify our incredibly complex tax system so that every-day, middle-class Americans can keep more of their hard-earned dollars. For instance, the typical family of four making the median family income will save nearly $1,500. The standard deduction also nearly doubles for individuals and families, and the child tax credit is significantly expanded. By bringing money back from overseas and encouraging entrepreneurship and small business again, we will finally be able to unleash our economy and get the country back on track.” —U.S. Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.)

“The Senate tax reform proposal will provide tax relief to hardworking Americansbring about more jobs and bigger paychecks through increased economic growth, foster greater opportunities for American businesses, large and small, to bring jobs and investment home, and create a simpler and fairer tax code.” —U.S. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.)

“Our plan is focused on three things. First is middle-class tax relief to help Ohio families who are dealing with this middle-class squeeze where expenses are up and wages are flat. With this plan, a median income family of four will save nearly $1,500 a year on their taxes…Second is helping make American companies more competitive so we can create more jobs and increase wages here at home instead of encouraging businesses to leave for other countries, which is happening now. Third is leveling the playing field internationally so we can bring back jobs and investment.” —U.S. Rob Portman (R-Ohio)

“This tax reform package is going to directly lower the tax bill, and therefore, be a pay raise for the overwhelming, vast majority of Pennsylvanians who are getting up every day and going to work and supporting their families. And that's very good news.” —U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.)

“Nevadans deserve a break, and that’s why I have been fighting to give middle-class families the biggest tax cut possible. This legislation is a positive step toward providing families with the tax relief that they desperately need and deserve, growing our economy, and making America competitive again.” —U.S. Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.)

“Tax reform is about everyday Americans being able to keep more of their hard-earned money. Tax reform is about families like the one I grew up in. Single-parent households working paycheck to paycheck year in and year out, praying and hoping for something good to happen.” —U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.)

“You deserve to keep more of your own money. This plan will cut taxes for working families in Louisiana, grow our economy, and help keep American jobs from moving overseas.” —U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.)
