RE: introduction of trade legislation
DA: Wednesday, June 13, 2001

Today Rep. Philip Crane is expected to announce the introduction of legislation to grant trade
promotion authority to the President. Sen. Chuck Grassley, ranking member of the Committee on
Finance, made the following comment on this development.

“It’s time to move beyond ideological differences over trade promotion authority and start
looking at concrete proposals. Congressman Crane is putting forward a strong, specific proposal for
members’ consideration. I look forward to working with him and other members to reach a broad,
bipartisan consensus about the scope and substance of trade promotion authority. The introduction
of this bill is a good start.”
