Hatch Statement on Trans-Pacific Partnership Negotiations
WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, today issued the following statement after completion of a four-day Ministerial meeting in Singapore regarding the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade negotiations:
"A comprehensive Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement that embodies high-standards provides the United States a real opportunity to gain greater access to some of the world's fastest growing economies for American made products and services. In my home state of Utah, the TPP means more exports and more jobs which, given the weak state of America's economy, is essential to a sustained recovery and more individual opportunity. Over the last four days, participating countries have made significant progress working to meet the highest standards that will benefit American businesses, workers, farmers and ranchers. As the United States continues to push towards the conclusion of these critical negotiations, it is imperative that all the parties maintain those commitments and obligations that we expect all of our international trading partners to meet – an expectation that will help to ensure swift passage through Congress. If some parties are unable to undertake such commitments, I again urge Ambassador Froman to consider concluding only with those that can, and if necessary, on a staggered timetable."
