Wyden Slams Trump Action to Target Universities Over Admissions Policy

WASHINGTON - Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today issued a statement after the Trump administration announced a rule that would strip tax exempt status from higher education institutions that offer support to minority students on the basis of race.

“Today’s action underscores Trump’s plans to target his political enemies by any means necessary," Wyden said. "At the same time that senior Trump officials appear to be using their political power to target and intimidate organizations they don’t like, this step further erodes a once-bipartisan principle that tax enforcement efforts would not single out organizations just because the current president disagrees with their views or actions.”

“As Chairman of the Finance Committee, when there were allegations of improper political targeting of non-profits by a Democratic administration, I conducted a bipartisan investigation to determine if they were valid. Now we have a Republican administration actually doing the type of political targeting that Republicans once claimed they opposed.”
