Wyden Statement on Bessent and IRS Commissioner Vacancy

Washington, D.C. — Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today issued the following statement on the announcement that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will continue functioning as acting IRS commissioner despite the expiration of his legally-authorized term in that role:

“The idea that Bessent is going to keep running the IRS past the expiration of his term as acting commissioner is outrageous but unsurprising from a corrupt administration that makes a sport out of violating the law and trampling on the Constitution. It’s possible this is entirely about Bessent wanting to maintain corrupt influence over the IRS, but it’s equally likely they can’t find a candidate for commissioner because the administration has violated taxpayer privacy laws on a massive scale and nobody with experience in tax law wants to put themselves in danger by getting involved. Meanwhile, IRS ‘CEO’ is a fake job that Congress never authorized -- nothing more than an end-run around the Senate’s role in choosing who runs our tax system.”
