Bipartisan IRS Investigative Report: A Look at What They’re Saying

Last week, after a two year investigation into the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) targeting of tax-exempt organizations, the Senate Finance Committee unanimously voted to release a report on its findings with 6103 authority – a Finance Committee first.

The report, the first bipartisan effort on this issue completed in Congress, found IRS management failed to provide effective control, guidance and direction over the processing of applications for tax-exempt status.

Headlines quickly noted the merits of the report’s findings. Here’s a look at what top news outlets across the country are saying:

The Associated Press: Bipartisan Probe of IRS Tea Party Scandal Blames Management Flaws, ‘Dysfunctional Culture’: “The Finance Committee's report is unique because investigators had access to confidential taxpayer information…The Finance Committee's investigation also resulted in the first bipartisan report on the scandal…”

Wall Street Journal: IRS Scrutiny of Conservative Groups Called ‘Delinquent’ in Senate Report: “Internal Revenue Service officials were delinquent” in their treatment of tea-party and other groups, resulting in heightened and inappropriate scrutiny, according to a new bipartisan Senate report.”

The New York Times: Senate Report Cites I.R.S. Mismanagement in Targeting of Tea Party Groups: “A Senate committee on Wednesday closed a two-year investigation with unanimous agreement that mismanagement at the Internal Revenue Service led it to improperly target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status.”

Bloomberg: IRS Delinquent in Handling Tea Party Cases, Report Says: “The report is the first bipartisan inquiry into how the Internal Revenue Service treated politically oriented nonprofit groups when they applied for tax-exempt status. It also provides new details about the actions of Lois Lerner, the agency’s former director of exempt organizations.”

Washington Post: Two Years After Scandal, the IRS Still Struggling: “The Finance Committee report is a big step toward closure...”
