Support Grows for Taxpayer Assistance and Service Act
Washington, D.C.—Leading individuals and organizations committed to protecting taxpayer rights and making tax administration easier to navigate are speaking out in support of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee leader’s recently introduced tax legislation.
The bipartisan Taxpayer Assistance and Service Act led by U.S. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) will improve communication between the IRS and taxpayers and streamline processes for tax compliance.
Here’s what supporters are saying:
American Coalition for Taxpayer Rights
“ACTR strongly supports this comprehensive, commonsense tax administration legislation
introduced by Chairman Crapo and Ranking Member Wyden, with important input by the
National Taxpayer Advocate’s Office.”
Melanie Lauridsen, Vice President of Tax Policy and Advocacy, American Institute of CPAs
“The TAS Act is a meaningful step toward a tax system that better supports taxpayers. By addressing inefficiencies and modernizing outdated processes, this legislation would ease unnecessary burdens and improve how taxpayers and practitioners interact with the IRS through provisions such as those found in the SAFE Act. Additional key provisions will help the profession best meet taxpayers needs and establish clear, minimum educational, ethical and professional standards for paid tax preparers. We appreciate the bipartisan leadership by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo and Ranking Member Ron Wyden to advance the TAS Act and we support moving this bill forward.”
Michele Stockwell, President, Bipartisan Policy Center Action
“Responsive, effective, and efficient government is most achievable when Democrats and Republicans work together. We applaud Chairman Crapo (R-ID) and Ranking Member Wyden (D-OR) for their bipartisan leadership on the Taxpayer Assistance and Service Act. This pragmatic, evidence-based bill would strengthen IRS customer service, modernize technology, and improve the taxpayer and tax preparation experience. We urge the Senate to advance this bipartisan package into law.”
Nina Olson, Executive Director, Center for Taxpayer Rights
“The TAS Act is a landmark piece of legislation, giving teeth to the rights of taxpayers as articulated in the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, including the right to quality service, to challenge the IRS and be heard, to appeal to an independent forum and to a fair and just tax system. The provisions of the TAS Act arise from the collective experience of taxpayers over the years as they interacted with the IRS and attempted to resolve their tax issues. Taxpayers will not only recognize their situations in this Act but also see the solutions to those situations. I commend the Committee for its bipartisan approach.”
Greg Macfarlane, CEO, Jackson Hewitt
“We applaud Chairman Crapo and Ranking Member Wyden for their leadership on these critical issues. We strongly support the swift passage of this important piece of legislation that will help taxpayers receive the fairer and more transparent tax experience they deserve.”
Megan Killian, Executive Vice President, National Association of Enrolled Agents
“The National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) strongly supports the bipartisan Taxpayer Assistance and Service (TAS) Act. The legislation reflects a thoughtful, taxpayer-focused approach by improving IRS customer service and transparency, expanding electronic access and procedural clarity, enhancing due process protections, supporting the independence and effectiveness of the Office of Appeals, and increasing access to assistance for low-income and vulnerable taxpayers. These reforms align closely with NAEA’s mission to promote fair, efficient tax administration and to ensure taxpayers and their representatives have the tools and protections necessary to navigate the tax system effectively. It also ensures accountability by putting into place minimum standards for tax preparers. NAEA looks forward to working with Congress to get it over the finish line.”
Scott Artman, CEO, National Association of Tax Professionals
“The strength of our tax system depends on knowledgeable, ethical preparers who stay current and take responsibility for their work. Modernization matters, but meaningful education standards and fair oversight are essential to protecting taxpayers and maintaining trust in the profession.”
Pete Sepp, President, National Taxpayers Union & NTU Foundation
“The Taxpayer Assistance and Service Act would take many welcome, long-overdue steps toward protecting taxpayer rights. NTU salutes Senate leaders for making bipartisan progress on numerous tax administration issues in a comprehensive legislative package that ranks in importance with the IRS Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998 and the Taxpayer First Act of 2019. We urge lawmakers to continue advancing this legislation through the process this year.”
Bryan Camp, George H. Mahon Professor of Law, Texas Tech University School of Law
“This bill contains significant improvements to tax administration. If enacted, it would help honest taxpayers meet their tax obligations while preventing dishonest taxpayers from evading theirs.”
