Wyden Statement on House Passage of Reconciliation Legislation
Washington, D.C. — Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed reconciliation legislation:
“House Republicans have launched a full-scale assault on Americans’ health and safety in the most rushed and reckless manner imaginable. In order to pay for tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and Trump’s corporate cronies, this dead-of-night bill contains the largest cuts to Medicaid and food assistance in American history.
“This bill means kids will go hungry, seniors will face greater abuse and neglect in nursing homes, people with disabilities will lose care at home, and millions of working Americans will be subjected to humiliation and bureaucratic water torture just to get health care. Millions will lose their health insurance, and many more will find it harder to get health care, leading to untold suffering and quiet deaths.
“Typical Americans won’t feel any economic benefit from this horrific bill. Republicans are cutting taxes for murderers and gang members who buy gun silencers, but they’re leaving millions of poor kids behind. They’re hiking Americans’ electricity bills and destroying our energy security for the benefit of Big Oil. Families who are barely getting by each month will be forced to subsidize the private school educations of the rich. Trump and Republicans aren’t even living up to their promise to eliminate taxes on tips since lifting income taxes doesn’t do a lick of good for working class Americans who don’t owe income taxes anyway.
“The ultra-wealthy donors and corporations whose money put Donald Trump back in office want a return on their investment, and Republicans are paying for it by waging a class war on typical American families. That’s what this bill is about. It’s caviar over kids, and wealth over workers. Senate Democrats will use every tool at our disposal to fight this grotesque bill.”
