Hatch on Eve of Tax Filing Deadline, Warns Middle-Class Families to Guard Against Tax Hikes if President Has His Way

ST. GEORGE – U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, issued the following statement today on the eve of the tax filing deadline:

“In ordinary times, filing one’s tax return is hardly a joyful occasion.  But when the nation is over $15 trillion in debt, and the President failing to offer any solutions to address this crisis and get our economy moving again, tax day has moved from insult to downright injury.  This is the day when hard-working Americans across the country are reminded of how much of what they earn goes to Washington to fund the government.  Taxpayers understand that every dollar that goes to Washington is a dollar less that goes to putting food on the table, gas in the car, and towards helping to strengthen our economy. Ironically, tax day this year coincides with Tax Freedom Day, which means that the average American has had to work 107 days into the year just to be able to earn enough to pay their taxes.

“On this tax day, middle-class families have to watch their wallets, because while the President wants everyone to believe taxing the so-called rich is the solution, he knows it will never generate the money he needs to keep expanding – or frankly to even sustain -- current levels  of government.  The White House’s dirty little secret is that the only way they can continue their tax-and-spend ways is by hitting the middle-class with massive tax increases.  In fact, after the half trillion in tax hikes in the President’s health law, it’s hard not to think of a tax hike that the White House doesn’t like.

“By the end of this year, Americans of every walk of life will be hit with the largest tax increase in history if the President and his allies in Congress fail to act.  A year and a half ago the President worked with Republicans to prevent this tax hike saying our economy was still too weak, and that’s the same approach he should take this year as our economy still struggles to gain strength.  But instead of showing real leadership to stop this crisis, the President and his Capitol Hill allies are pushing the Buffett Tax, which even the President and his allies say won’t grow our economy or balance the budget.  While the President continues to play political games to appease his liberal base, American taxpayers are rightfully worried that they’re the President’s next target.”
