Wyden Blasts Trump Tariffs on Brazilian Beef, Coffee and Building Materials to Protect Brazil’s Corrupt Ex-President
Washington, D.C. — Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., released the following statement on Donald Trump’s threat to impose 50 percent tariffs on products imported from Brazil, as retribution for the prosecution of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is charged with trying to overturn a democratic election in 2022.
“Trump is going to make Americans pay more for coffee, hamburgers and housing, not to get a better deal for U.S. workers or families, but to pressure Brazil to let their corrupt former president off the hook, ” Wyden said. “This is a brazenly illegal effort by Donald Trump to sacrifice the economy to settle his own personal scores, and it is far outside his legal authority. I’m working with state attorneys general to challenge his authority in court, and with my colleagues in the Senate to seize back our Constitutional role as the final word on trade.”
