Wyden Statement on CBO Analysis of Tax Gap

Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today released the following statement on the Congressional Budget Office analysis of the tax gap and IRS enforcement:

“Republicans have spent the last decade attacking and bullying the IRS, and CBO’s report makes clear the devastating effects of their efforts. Audits of individuals are down 46%, and audits of corporations are down 37%. Not surprisingly, audits of the wealthiest individuals and largest corporations, which require more resources and specialized staff, fell the most.

“It’s a national scandal that those at the top can steal billions from taxpayers and face little to no scrutiny. The CBO estimates that an additional $40 billion in IRS funding would result in $103 billion in additional revenue. That’s $63 billion for priorities like health care, education and infrastructure just by making tax cheats pay what they owe. If Democrats take control of the Senate, one of my top priorities will be rebuilding the IRS so the country can meet its most pressing needs.”
