Wyden Statement on Trump's Authoritarian Memorandum Targeting Progressive Speech

Washington, D.C. — Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today issued the following statement on Donald Trump’s new memorandum directing several federal agencies to target and stifle progressive groups and free speech under the guise of pursuing “domestic terrorism networks”:

“Donald Trump hates our Constitutional right to free speech because he is a weak and unpopular figure whose only viable way of holding onto power is this kind of bald-faced authoritarianism. Anyone who lends a breath of credibility to Trump’s lie that this directive is about domestic terrorism is actively assisting his subversion of democracy in America.

“When the time comes to hold members of this administration accountable for the harm they’re doing to our country by trampling all over the Constitution, a pardon from a lawless president will not let Trump’s subordinates off the hook.”
