Wyden Praises Trade Court Decision Striking Down Trump’s Illegal Global Tariffs

Washington, D.C. — Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today praised the U.S. Court of International Trade for striking down Donald Trump’s global tariffs, which amounted to massive new taxes on virtually all imported products and threatened even higher tax increases on imported goods in coming months:

“I argued from the start that Donald Trump’s claim that he could simply decree sky-high new taxes on imported goods depended on mangling the Constitution beyond recognition. Trump’s trade taxes jacked up prices on groceries and cars, threatened shortages of essential goods and wrecked supply chains for American businesses large and small. Once again Oregon is on the right side of history, thanks to Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield’s leadership in rejecting Donald Trump’s flimsy justification for these tariffs.

“I’m gratified that the Court of International Trade agreed with me, AG Rayfield and my colleagues that these sweeping tariffs are illegal. I have no doubt the legal wrangling will continue, but I’m committed to retaking Congress’s authority over trade for good and shutting down Trump’s ability to unilaterally declare trade war with the world.”
