Bipartisan Delegation Urges De-Escalation of US-Canada Trade Conflict In Meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Carney

Wyden, Murkowski, Hassan and Cortez Masto Highlight Importance of Trade, Tourism and National Security Ties; Urge Canada to Address Discriminatory Digital Taxes, Reinvigorate US-Mexico-Canada Agreement

Washington, D.C. – Senate Finance Committee Ranking Democrat Ron Wyden, D-Ore., Senator Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev.,

urged a resolution of trade conflicts between the United States and Canada in a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney today.

“Four Bipartisan Senators sent the message that we want to get some stability back in the economy between the United States and Canada. We are bridge builders, not people who throw wrenches,” Wyden said. “I was gratified that the prime minister confirmed that he would proceed this fall with legislation to repeal the digital services tax on American companies. It’s clear that instead of scrapping the USMCA, or raising tariffs on both sides, as some have suggested, our governments should reinvigorate USMCA so both nations can prosper.”

“Canada is one of America’s closest trade partners and allies, and in Nevada, we have a special connection with our neighbors to the north,” Cortez Masto said. “Every year, well over a million Canadians visit the Silver State. Despite the chaos of the Trump presidency, I will continue to fight to ensure American workers are treated fairly while strengthening our ties with Canada to bolster our tourism economy and promote American national security. We can do both.”

The members also met with Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Industry Melanie Joly and Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc. The members raised a number of trade, tourism and economic issues, the importance of partnering on national security and cybersecurity, and on working together to combat fentanyl trafficking.
